Yuichi Hibi, Untitled from the Neco series, 2006
Michael Dawson Gallery is pleased to represent the work of contemporary photographer Yuichi Hibi. Hibi’s early work dates from the late 1980s when he moved to New York to pursue a career as an actor and filmmaker. His first monograph, Imprint, was published by Nazraeli Press in 2005. This series of quietly intense images, taken in New York and Japan, evoke a sense of longing and isolation as they find order and meaning in overlooked places and things. In 2006, Nazraeli published Hibi’s photographic project with Robert Frank titled, A Weekend With Mr.Frank, appearing in the publisher’s highly regarded One Picture Book series. The title of Hibi’s latest book, Neco, refers to the Japanese word for cat. A 2008 publication from Nazraeli Press, this elaborate artist’s book explores the complex role of the cat in Japanese culture as both a symbol of good fortune and calamity. The photographs in Neco, also encourage the viewer to reflect on the joys and perils of human experience.
